That night, Maggie’s mother finally joined her and her father for dinner. She was so quiet that Maggie struggled to notice any difference from when she had locked herself away. All the same, it was nice to have her back at the table with them. After excusing herself from the room and telling her parents she was retiring to bed, Maggie sneaked back down to the kitchen to talk to Florence. Sitting down to a cup of tea together, Maggie filled Florence in on the whole episode with the soldier’s missing wallet.

‘I’m worried I’ll get into trouble for covering for Betty,’ she confided. It had been on her mind all evening.

‘You did the right thing, love,’ Florence assured her. ‘That poor lass shouldn’t have stolen from the soldier, but he was taking advantage of her just as much. You’d do good to remember that.’ Maggie knew Florence was right, and she felt a lot better. ‘Fact yer friends all felt the same says a lot too, mind. But you need to visit this girl soon and make sure she knows not to make habits of helping herself to people’s wallets from here on out. You can’t keep covering for her. Now, tell me who else you got to know today,’ she smiled, resting her cheek on her hand.

As Maggie brought Florence up to date on everything, including the burglary, she realised she and the girls hadn’t got around to dropping in on Sally at the laundry as they had planned. She couldn’t quite believe how busy they had been already – and they had only just started.

‘We should go and see Sally at the laundry first thing,’ she thought out loud as Florence cleared up around her. ‘She might even have some information about the burglary.’

‘That the one you was telling me about?’ Florence asked. ‘The one who knows everything about everyone?’

‘Yes, that’s the one,’ Maggie said.

‘Well, she’s bound to know something. You ought to take her some jellied eels,’ Florence suggested. Maggie looked up, confusion sweeping over her face. ‘Soften her up,’ Florence smiled. Maggie’s face was still blank. ‘Goodness, child,’ Florence sighed. ‘Arthur told you Sally loves jellied eels. Now why d’you suppose he went out of his way to share that with you?’

Of course! Maggie had forgotten all about Arthur’s little tip – she certainly couldn’t remember telling Florence about it. She must have been more tired than she realised last night, and she felt foolish for not catching on about the eels herself – it seemed obvious now.

‘If someone needed something from me, or if they wanted to say “ta” for helping them out, it’d work a treat if they brought me some lovely, moist sponge cake,’ Florence added, raising her eyebrows as she kept her eyes fixed on Maggie.

‘Oh, Florence,’ Maggie giggled. ‘I can take a hint rather well, you know, despite missing Arthur’s. Rest assured I will return home soon with a wonderful sponge cake for you!’

‘It would surely be appreciated,’ Florence smiled. ‘And
